Legendary Cougar Magazine Volume 1 Issue 5 is available online now.

In Issue 5, we’ve added a new department called “Cougar Marketplace,” which will follow recent sales of classic Cougars. This month, we look at the recent auctions held in Arizona and Florida. As we near the end of Volume 1, we’re looking forward to Volume 2. In Cat Tracks, co-editors Bill Basore and Rich Truesdell review the past year and look at what the future may hold for Legendary Cougar Magazine.

Instead of calling this the “international issue,” we probably should have called it the “challenge” issue. The challenges came on many fronts. Getting together with the featured cars’ owners was not always easy due to the separation of miles and time zones.

Photography presented an additional challenge. By the time the final roster of featured vehicles was complete, some of the cars had already been put away for winter storage, making obtaining additional photographs impractical. The photographs that were available were low-resolution and not of the quality we like to use for features.

Enter the marvels of the modern computing world. Facebook helped us “get on the same page” with far-flung Cougar owners, and photo-editing software in the capable hands of LCM’s Design Consultant Brian Veit salvaged some otherwise-unusable images.

There were two distinctly different versions of the Cougar, the Standard and the XR-7.  The Standard came first, and it is fair to say that had it not been a resounding success, there never would have been an XR-7.  The Standard Cougar was by far the most popular Cougar model; it sold at least three-to-one over the XR-7.  Chances are, the Cougar that first caught your eye was a Standard.

In Issue 3, Legendary Cougar Magazine takes a look at three Standard Cougars:

• The ’68 Standard hardtop owned by John Stravrou, his first car.
• The ’70 sunroof Standard owned by Jeff and Carol Bingaman, a show winner.
• The award-winning ’73 Standard convertible owned by Dwain Barker.

In 1967 Ford was missing the street performance boat in a big way. Almost 700,000 high performance cars were sold and Ford, the “Total Performance” company, was getting about 7% of that market. Loyal owners were unhappy, dealers were unhappy, and Hot Rod Magazine called Ford performance cars “counterfeit.”

Bob Tasca was the youngest Ford dealer principal in America. He was operating in the smallest state of the union, Rhode Island. His first showroom was leveled by a hurricane months after being completed. In spite of it all, Tasca Ford had become the second largest Ford dealership in the country. When his mechanic blew up the 390 in Tasca’s daily driver Mustang, the recipe for the Cobra Jet was created straight out of the Ford parts inventory.
